Santa Marcela, Apayao - The Local Government Unit of Santa Marcela, in collaboration with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) and the Provincial Government of Apayao (PGA), organized a Wetland Awareness Walk and Talk at the Bacut Lake Tourism Complex and Nature Park on February 2, 2024.
This event was part of the World Wetlands Day celebration, highlighting the theme "Wetland and Human Well-being." Its objective was to raise awareness about the crucial role wetlands play in both environmental sustainability and the well-being of communities.
World Wetlands Day originated from a group of environmentalists seeking to commemorate and safeguard wetlands, emphasizing their significance to the Earth and its inhabitants. Environmentalists spend this day to disseminate information about wetlands and promote actions to protect them.
Wetlands offer essential benefits, providing food, clean water, floodwater storage, and safeguarding coastal communities from the impacts of extreme events.
The initiative by Santa Marcela, led by Hon. Mayor Evelyn B. Martinez, involved the participation of Sangguniang Bayan members, office heads, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office led by PENR Officer Rainer D. Balbuena, and the Provincial Government of Apayao represented by Marcelo B. Menor EnP., OIC Chief, ENR Division, Provincial Governor's Office (PGO).
As part of the program, a tree planting activity took place, with the planting of 30 golden shower and 30 acacia trees.
