Luna, Apayao - The Department of Agriculture-Cordillera Administrative Region (DA-CAR) pledged to provide one million pesos augmentation fund to the provincial government for their animal virus detection laboratoty equipment, Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Ralph Verzon said on Monday, January 23, 2023.
The fund is intended for additional laboratory equipment for the recently established Provincial Animal Detection Diseases Laboratory in San Gregorio, Luna.
"Learning from our experience during the height of the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak, we intend to strengthen our detection strategies," Verzon said.
Apayao is one of the hardest hit provinces in the Cordillera region by the ASF last year and with said funding, Verzon said that his office is planning to purchase Convection Polymerase Chain Reaction (cPCR) equipment to be used on point-of-need detection.
"This will aid us in taking necessary actions on the control of the virus strain," Verzon added.
Verzon also thanked Governor Elias C. Bulut, Jr. in allocating funds for the establishment of the laboratory during his incumbecy as the province's representative in congress. "This only shows his support to the swine industry in the province."
