Sta. Marcela, Apayao - Triathletes from Pudtol emerged as the champion for the yApayao Triathlon, while Conner disaster frontliners recorded the quickest emergency response operations in the Rescuelympics held at the Bacut Lake and Tacang SWIP in Marcela, Sta. Marcela this morning, February 11, 2023 as part of the celebration of the 28th Foundation Day of the Province of Apayao.
Both events were participated in by Local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Offices (LDRRMOs), Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and Local Government Unit (LGU) staff and other DRRM stakeholders from the province’s seven municipalities.
The rescuelympics is a time-trial event where the Quick Response Team (QRT) will be tested based on their preparedness when it comes to emergencies while triathlon relay is an open catergory modified race with an indigenous twist.
The activity started with an opening program where Sta. Marcela Mayor Evelyn Martinez expressed her gladness and thrill that the Tacang Small Water Impounding Project (SWIP), aside from being chosen as a venue for Say-am 2023 activities, has now being promoted as a tourism destination in the province.
Congressman Eleanor Bulut-Begtang who led the activity lauded the LGU Sta. Marcela for the continous development and innovations for Bacut Lake and Tacang Swip in which she called a miracle project
Along with the Bacut Lake, Tacang SWIP was originally inteded to benefit rice fields in its immediate service area in Barangay Marcela later evolved as a tourism attraction for water sports adventure seekers.
"This man-made lake was just a simple vision before and, look at it now, a venue of our major events in the province. I will surely continue to support this project of LGU Sta. Marcela,” Begtang committed.
