Kabugao, Apayao - In a bid to improve the quality of coffee beans produced in Kabugao, Apayao, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – Apayao conducted a Coffee Green Grading Training to some 25 coffee farmers in Barangay Baliwanan last week, April 19, 2023.
The training covered topics such as the importance of grading green coffee beans, the various grades of green coffee, and the factors that affect the quality of green coffee beans. Participants were also trained hands-on in differentiating between grades of coffee beans and identifying defects in the beans.
DTI-Apayao Provincial Coffee Industry Cluster point person Ms. Mariel Kate W. Gannawa who served as the resource person for the training introduced to the participants the 2021-2025 Coffee Roadmap which articulates a plan to guide key business owners and government agencies in the progress of the coffee industry cluster.
Said roadmap, according to Gannawa, is designed based on the coffee industry stakeholder's pursuit of inclusive growth models thru value chain approach and to sustain their businesses, technical capability and skills, and, in a broader sense, to create avenues for food security and poverty alleviation.
Gannawa said the training will also prepare the coffee farmers in their participation to the upcoming 2023 Cordillera Coffee Quality Competition and eventually to the Philippine Coffee Quality Competition (PCQC).
Jessie B. Ayabo, Punong Barangay of Baliwanan encouraged his constituents to continue striving for quality coffee which could become their jump-off point in gaining bigger market opportunities.
Kabugao, like the towns of Pudtol and Calanasan, is one of the province’s identified coffee producers which market is being groomed by the DTI-CAR, in partnership with the Provincial and Municipal Local Government Units (LGUs) concerned.
Pudtol and Calanasan coffee farmers also underwent the same training earlier in March this year.
