CHED-CAR visits ASC, assesses implementation of free higher education initiatives

Luna, Apayao - The Commission on Higher Education – Cordillera (CHED – CAR) conducted a visit to Apayao State College - Luna Campus (ASC – Luna) on February 20, 2024, to assess the implementation of free higher education initiatives and other projects.

Facilitated by the Unified Student Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Education (UniFAST), this visit aimed to ensure the effective execution of educational policies and support mechanisms.

Republic Act (RA) 10931, commonly referred to as the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act mandates the provision of free tuition and miscellaneous fees for students enrolled in state universities and colleges (SUCs), local universities and colleges (LUCs), and state-run technical-vocational institutions.

Officials from CHED-CAR, including Supervising Education Program Specialist Menzie O. Kuengan, and Education Supervisor II/UniFAST Focal Person Dr. Bernadette C. Pal-ec, were present during the visit. They were joined by Regional Coordinators Jezeny O. Laoyan, Ana Grace P. Salibad, and Marife Calimodag.

ASC President Dr. John N. Cabansag expressed gratitude to the government for its various scholarship programs. The sentiments were shared during the conclusion of the event. "We are very thankful to the government for providing many forms of scholarships, making college education free and accessible,” Cabansag expressed.

Also in attendance were Dr. Ronald Ocampo, Dr. Rema Bascos Ocampo, Philip Constantine L. Mandac, Evelyn P. Alvarez, and Kathreeza B. Castillo, alongside students and employees.

The visit forms part of CHED-CAR's annual monitoring activities aimed at ensuring the effective and equitable implementation of targeted programs. It serves as a platform to address any issues or concerns related to student grantee enrollment, attendance, graduate tracking for scholars, and other pertinent matters.
