Luna, Apayao - The Provincial Solid Waste Management Board (PSWMB) and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) held a joint meeting today, March 21, 2023 for the first quarter post assessment and discussion of concerns for better implementation of programs and projects.
The meeting, which was held at AETSC Clubhouse, San Gregorio, Luna, was attended by members of the PSWMB and PDRRMC, as well as representatives from Local Government Units (LGUs), National Line Agencies (NLAs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and other stakeholders.
During the meeting, the PSWMB presented its current solid waste management initiatives and strategies including waste segregation, composting programs, plastic waste management, as well as the challenges it faces in implementing them.
Meantime, Mr. Nilo Campo from Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) presented the result of the initial Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) assessment and evaluation on environmental management, while PGO-ENRD Team, delivered their post-assessment of solid waste management during celebration of the Say-Am 2023 along with the criteria for the Search for the Most Environment-Friendly Municipality and School.
The PDRRMC, for its part, tackled the need to strengthen the province's early warning systems and enhance the capacity of local DRRM officers. They also discussed the importance of promoting community participation and empowering local communities disaster risk reduction and management.
Further, Weather Services Chief Engr. Leo Bunag presented the recent developments of the Apayao-Abulug River Basin Flood Forecasting and Warning Project (FFWP) and their efforts to enable efficient, targeted emergency responses, and timely provisions of flood warnings.
Provincial Administrator Atty. Edmar Pascua, who presided over the said joint meeting, expressed his gratitude for the productive discussion and emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation among stakeholders to achieve a cleaner and more sustainable environment for the province and encouraged them to continue working together towards a more resilient and disaster-prepared community.
The joint meeting between PSWMB and PDRRMC is a significant step towards a more effective and comprehensive approach in ensuring the safety and well-being of the province's residents. It shows that working together and involving various sectors, the province can address its waste management and DRRM challenges and move to a more sustainable future.
