Luna, Apayao - Members of the solo parent sector in the Province of Apayao are assured of more support and benefits from the government following the enactment of Republic Act (RA) 11861 also known as The Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2022.
In a talk during the Solo Parents provincial caravan held this morning, January 12, 2023, PGO consultant Atty. Julie Ann Salvador said that several provisions of the old law were improved which will entail more social protection programs for solo parents.
RA 11861 lapsed into law last June 4, 2022. It expanded the coverage of RA 8972 or The Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2000 .
Under said law, the spouse or an immediate family member of a low/semi-skilled Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) who has been away from the country for 12 consecutive months will already be covered by benefits. The amendment also included grandparents and guardians who bear full responsibility for their children.
Legal assistance and advice, livelihood opportunities, counseling services, stress debriefing, and parent effectiveness services are the few new improvements added to the social protection services in what Salvador called "comprehensive package" of this new law.
