Luna, Apayao - Provincial Adminsitrator Atty. Edmar Pascua called for an intensified enforcement of the existing local regulations regarding the use of plastics as problems regarding plastic waste management is on the rise in the province.
During the Provincial Solid Waste Management Board meeting, today, March 21, 2023 at AETSC Clubhouse in Luna, the board found out that the province has been grappling with a growing plastic waste problem, which has not only resulted in environmental degradation but also posed health risk to residents.
The board also noted that high levels of plastic waste in the province have been linked to poor waste management practices, which consequently led to the accumulation of plastic waste in various areas.
Atty. Pascua then tasked the Municipal Local Government Units (MLGUs) and concerned National Line Agencies (NLAs) to ramp up their efforts and enforce necessary measures to minimize the use of plastics. He also emphasized the need for the stakeholders to collaborate in the fight against plastic waste, saying the problem could not be solved by one entity alone.
The call for action from the Provincial Administrator is a welcomed development. The problem of plastic pollution requires a concerted effort from all sectors of society, and the government has a crucial role to play in this regard.
Pascua said that by implementing sustainable practices and promoting responsible waste management, Apayao can reduce the impact of plastic waste on the environment and protect the health of communities.
