7 Apayao councilors attend young legislators convention for policy making


Iloilo City, Philippines - Seven young councilors from the province joined the two-day national convention of the National Movement of Young Legislators (NMYL) held on February 23-24, 2023 in Iloilo City.


Comprising the Apayao delegation are NMYL-CAR Chairperson and Calanasan Councilor Naville Taccalan, NMYL-Apayao Chapter President and Pudtol Councilor Ricky Laoat, Board Member Mcleen Julian, Sangguniang Kabataan Provincial Federation President Wenz Nathaly Alferez, Flora Councilor Genevieve Cacacho and Calanasan Councilors Kervy Gali and Harold Danggan.


NMYL is a group of elected local lawmakers in the Philippines who are aged 40 years or younger. The local lawmakers are elected officials who hold positions such as municipal/city councilor, municipal/city vice mayor, provincial board member, and provincial vice governor.


It is a coalition aimed at empowing young legislators by providing them a platform to exchange ideas, share best practices, and collaborate on projects that promote youth development, environmental protection, health, education, and other key issues.


In an interwiew with one of the participants, Hon. Wenz Nathaly Cagat stressed the importance of active participation of the youth sector in shaping policies and programs in the local setting.


"The youth should not be spectators during legislative sessions but an active member that encourages positive change in their areas of resposibility and ultimately on a larger scale such as provincial and national level." Alferez said adding that with this undertaking (National Convention), "more young people will be inspired to engaged in politics and governance."


With the youth having a significant portion in the population, NMYL seeks to leverage its collective strength to mobilize more youth to participate in nation-building, governance, and politics.
