Santa Marcela, Apayao - Fifteen tailors and dressmakers, primarily from the Sipa Women's Weavers Association, Maddie's Fashion and Design, Marcela Weavers Association, and individual dressmakers, participated in a 3-day skills and upgrading training on loom-woven handicrafts and dressmaking from September 20–22, 2023, at the Municipal Ground's big kiosk.
The training is part of Congresswoman Eleanor C. Bulut-Begtang's forward-looking initiatives which include enhancement training in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Apayao, led by Provincial Director Engr. Wena M. Buston.
The goal is to promote and develop the burgeoning loom-weaving business in Apayao and provide access to all seven municipalities.
As the demand for wearable suits and dresses featuring locally known Apayao Abel or Apayao fabric grows, the DTI has committed to assisting local dressmakers and handicraft manufacturers in refining their crafts.
Ms. Maureen Alvarez from Cassidy Designs, a seasoned seamstress using Kalinga looms, served as the mentor. Her expertise in fashion shows across the region guided participants through design, body measurement, pattern-making, cutting, sewing, fitting, and finishing touches, with support from her assistant, Ms. Jay Anne Auggas.
During the closing program, each dressmaker showcased their finished products. Ms. Elizabeth F. Palacay, the LEDIPO Designate of Santa Marcela, and Ms. Zenaida Borromeo of the Negosyo Center-Flora and Santa Marcela praised the exquisite and vibrant tops crafted during the training.
