Apayao, Philippines – A total of 1,092 families in Apayao suffered from flooding due to the continuous rain brought by Typhoon Neneng on October 16, 2022.

Typhoon Neneng underwent extreme and rapid intensification, bringing heavy rains in Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Apayao, Abra, Benguet, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur.

Many of the families have been temporarily displaced by rising water levels, while others experienced having their crops or fields damaged.

Joeffrey Boromeo, Officer of Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) in Apayao, through Bombo Radyo Baguio, relayed that the municipality of Calanasan recorded the highest number of families affected by the typhoon with 387 or 1,224 individuals from the barangays of Sta. Elena and Sta. Filomena.

Boromeo added that other municipalities like Luna recorded at least 239 families or 895 individuals, Pudtol with 208 families or 786 individuals, Flora with 186 families or 776 individuals and Sta. Marcela with 72 families or 269 individuals affected.

The PDRRMO officer said the continuous rain eroded soil from the mountain and blocked waterways, while the Apayao river reached its critical water level, flooding the municipalities.

The officer added that many houses were submerged, and water sources were damaged.

During the onslaught of the said tropical depression, some affected families sought shelter at different evacuation centers, nearby neighbors, relatives, and churches.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (MDRRMC) through the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer (MSWDO) continue to reach out to families and individuals affected by the deluge.

Meantime, the provincial government of Apayao immediately distributed assorted relief packs and potable water to the flood victims.
